Default WWII German Side Cap

I have acquired this WWII German side cap on a trade from a friend of mine who was originally from Austria. The side cap was his cousins grandfather with the last name of Froemel or Fro"mel and probably entered the army through Austria. I have very little knowledge on German WWII clothing. The only test I have conducted on the cap was burning a very small piece of fabric from the stitching which burned like cotton and not polyester. none of the stitching fluoresces under long wave ultraviolet black light. The cockade is slightly damaged and has some minor wear on the wool. What does the purple piping mean?
