I use Paint Shop Pro, and I do the same thing: I use the brushes, fill and other tools to make the background one solid color, set the background color to transparent and then copy and paste it into the other picture. A little detail work with the smudge tool (or whatever they call it in Paint Shop), and it blends right it. The only problem I have with it is that the "set to transparent" option is cleverly hidden somewhere in the menus, and I usually have a problem finding it.
