During my first tour in Germany I watched an elderly groundskeeper mowing the lawn at a large country home. He was using a scythe! He would take a couple of dozen passes with the scythe then stop, take a whet stone from his pocket, touch up the blade with a few strokes and start mowing again. The grass was evenly cut with no trace of a pattern...you couldn't do a better job with a modern mower. I was fascinated.
