I believe Eric's case from Pakistan has a canvas lining. I would not recommend canvas for a lining. Seems to me it would be a little rough on a pistols finish.

I have kept my carbine in it's pigskin lined case now for 8 years, it is there as we speak..and it has not adversly affected the metal or the wood. The pigskin I use is as smooth as chamois.
