Default Basic Gun Safety (Common Sense)

I had just read the below article (see link) this morning when I saw the below statement by Ed Tinker in the post "1917 German Luger" in the All Post-WWII Lugers Section:

AND any gun should be treated as loaded until proven otherwise, in other words, when handed a gun, hold safely away from anyone and 'clear' it (open and check chamber) and trust me, even guys who handle guns all the time screw up and don't always remember.....

No truer words have ever been spoken! This article from Military.com is a prime example. A highly trained professional operator winds up with tragic results from not following basic gun safety rules. This is a very controversial case, who know for sure? One thing is set in stone - alcohol and firearms DO NOT mix!
This is a very sad story about an obviously well-trained professional, patriotic young man.
Best regards, Don
