Hindenburg was a war hero and very popular after WW I, the hero of the battle of Tannenberg, were he won the most important battle against the imerial Russian army in 1915 . "Der Held von Tannenberg", nick name "Masuren Paule".
As of today, he is a well respected General and democratic elected former President of the "Weimar" republic.
During WWI and later on he had the popularity like a pop star. You could buy pictures, cups, plates, everything with his picture on it.
