Since you found it in Portugal, it most likely was part of the last Mauser PO8s in the 42BYF m & n suffix ranges, sold to Portugal & Bulgaria in 1943, since by then the German military was purchasing the P38 and they were still winning the war. Most of these were probably produced with the standard checkered wood grips, but as they wore out, the Porugese replaced them with their locally made black plastic grips. TH
