Interesting pic...I'm guessing the three holes were drilled in the forging (after the rough machining of the flat side surfaces) as a positive locating index for subsequent operations...

I couldn't quite figure out the thin cut in the inside rail area of Roadkill's pic...It doesn't really make any sense...

Neither of these look like how the 'original' Lugers were machined...and that's only my guess from looking at the tool marks on mine...
