Very true.

I have an old 1895 Winchester, no bluing and a chunk that was knocked out and then replaced by some different wood. Dad said that one day grandfather was out hunting deer, the rifle somehow got dropped and the horse stomped it just right and knocked out a 1x3 inch piece of wood, without breaking the stock, so they repaired it.

its being passed to my son as a family heirloom
