Most .45 autos you see in the movies are actually 9mm guns, which are easier to blank. They also open up the last inch of barrel to still give the gun that .45 muzzle.

If you recall the opening title scenes of the Magnum PI series, Tom Selleck is shown shoving home a magazine into his pistol. The telltale creases of a 9mm 1911 magazine can clearly be seen.
