sounds like a mismatch, pictures would help, but yes, whatever number is on the frame, should have the last 2 of the serial number on most small parts.

The receiver was made in 1937, the S/42 would be correct also and stands for Mauser.

We all do silly things like steel wool, etc on items when we are smaller.
