Post-WW2, Mauser used the following system:

First they milled out a square, 3.9mm across, 1.5mm deep.
Then they milled out the dovetails using a dovetail cutter with a base of 5.43mm and a 40 degree angle. This would open up the top gap to 4.18mm.
