Well, they aren't stainless, they are brightly polished. You can see a 4 inch barrel one under the old pictures on the left of one I used to own.

Also, I think it is more likely a hard chrome or other hard plating;they have some that are shiney and some that are duller.

Unless made by hand, its not stainless, no one has made one commericially except Aimco and they have a look about them.
