The obvious WW1 maritime adventure story is "The Emden-Ayesha Adventure" by Hellmuth von Mucke. This book, which is mentioned by Jan C. Still in "Imperial Lugers", has a strong Luger connection (although these are called revolvers in my translation). It's the story of the landing party of the commerce raider Emden, stranded on Direction Island after the Emden was destroyed, and their epic journey home to Germany. It's a really great read.
