Rescue dogs seem to know they are getting a second chance and are eager to please. Dobes especially. People see a finished, trained dobe and want one. They don't realize the work involved. So a lot of them wind up in rescue. I've had the breed for almost 25 years now and speak pretty good Doberman.
I believe you really need two dobies. Have you ever watched these guys play? Not just the sprints, chases, but the wrestling, body slams, neck chewing. A lab might only last a week. Fast! Elf, when she was younger could catch a bird in flight and bring it to me. Still alive. Yesterday it was only a well chewed vole...
Plus, dobes were bred to be human companion/protectors. They need people to be complete. I can't be with mine 24/7 so they need another dobe to hang out with. They are super intelligent and can get bored too.
They are the first line of defense for the collection. Anybody sets a toe on my property and they go to alert mode. Sometimes from a deep sleep. Wonder how they do that? I sometimes hear Pete get up in the night. He's checking out the house.
