Ed, I had the same problem until I stopped using the english (or norwegian) version of the site.
Go for the german version, if you would like to search up more than one word;
Click -> Erweiterte Suche (extended search)
cross off -> nur ganze Wörter (all words)
There is probably something work with the search function (in addition to beeing slow)..
