There is a small "L" shaped spring, which is located under where the lever lies within the gun's frame. It serves to keep the lever from falling out. Make sure that little bent, wire spring is firmly in the slot under where the lever will go.
Make sure there is no debris or other obstructions. Sometimes, there is a slight resistance the last few mms. If all else is clean and in its place. Make sure the tip end of the lever is lined up well with the exit hole on the far side of the frame and giggle it a bit while pushing through. It should snap into place.
Obviously, don't force anything that simply does not want to go.
