No modification is necessary, if you use a bullet design compatable with the loading ramp, but more importantly, the feeding nature of the magazine.
Over all cartridge length is a real key to proper Luger function, with Hollow Points or otherwise. With hollow points I'd start my work with the old DWM length, that being 29mm.
To really have a perfectly functional Luger, you must reload just for it.
With properly constructed reloads, and as Vlim has reminded us, crisp springs, a Luger can be a highly reliable pistol. Without these two elements, a Luger can be a continual nightmare.
