Alvin, the work cited is very good for Imperial and Weimar era army and naval markings. As Vlim states, Don Maus' "History Writ in Steel" is the latest and best work on police markings.

If you can handle the German text I would suggest Gortz and Wacker's massive work "Handbuch Deutscher Waffenstempel" as the best book available on German military markings. It goes far beyond just identifying markings to include weapon distribution by unit type an much more.
