Re: LUGER UNIT MARKINGS
Hi Robert and welcome to the forum
Sounds like you have a WQ.W.I Army pistol that was taken into polezi service after W.W.I.
The unit marking, which I am assuming to be police markings due to their length and complexity, translate approximately to:
1. Schupo Erlangen, First Precinct, 2nd gruppe, pistol 23.
2.Schupo, Stuttgart (Stuttgart is near Erlangen, as I recall) 2nd District, 11th precinct, watch C, weapon 23.
3.Schupo, Erlangen, First precinct, weapon 23.
The Schupo was the "Security Police" or the general city municipal police associated with law and order duties in Weimar and later, Nazi, Germany.
Your gun has seen a lot of history and should be treasured accordingly as an artifact. Please do not "improve" it by rebluing, etc. If you wish to sell it, please offer it to the forum first!
A good investment is the book, German Small Arms Markings From Official Sources by Gortz and Bryann...its about $50 and is available on Amazon, I believe.
Hope this helps!
