Jim,

Welcome to the forum.

You have a nice 1939 42 Mauser Luger. However the grips are made up later to decorate it. The medallion is a "Deutscher Saengerbund" (German Singer's Association) lapel pin, I believe. I could be wrong, but don't think so. It has nothing to do with the pistol, nor the history of the pistol. Someone, possibly the Vet who brought it home wanted to dress it up, and probably didn't have any idea what the medallion represented.

If it was a presentation piece, the grips would fit much better. Note the gap at the top rear, below the safety. If you can find a set of nice original Mauser checkered wood grips, it would be closer to what it should be and correct.
