This may not be as important as it seems; I recently received a Mauser "Broomhandle" imported by Keng's Firearms Specialties in Atlanta, GA. The import marking was ~3/32" high, including importer's abbreviated address, model # of pistol, caliber, and country of origin. It was either mechanically engraved or laser engraved; but not much deeper than the bluing. A quick wipe with cold blue and it is all but invisible. Pics attached to illustrate.
