I didn't see your comment, but I agree with the others about your public apology.
But I'm here to mostly to talk about your unemployment as I had faced this problem a few times and I know how tough it can be.

Be sure you will find a new position as no one stays without a job forever. Keep calm and self-confident as I'm sure that you have talent and skills that are needed somewhere. Don't feel embarassed to tell your friends about your situation, bear in mind that your network is the most important tool at this moment. Call everyone: former co-workers, family, neighbours, etc. and let them know that your are seeking a new position. You'd be surprised how receptive they can be.

It doesn't mean that you are begging neither that you are desperate. You just need to know where the oportunities are, that's how networking works.

You've been in a real war - that was tough. This will be a piece of cake, believe me.
