There is a custom sports model in the collection of a German weapons specialist that features modified grips (smoothed) and an added barrel weight.
Mauser did manage to produce its entire production line at a profit, so at least from an economic point of view they did allright. The main problems were related to expected changes in gun laws (particularly in Europe) that never really materialized and the challenge to come up with a production method that was financially viable. Producing a .45 ACP version of the Luger is a challenge to say the least. Even the development of a reliable 9mm version from the Swiss 06/29 design was troublesome, something that even convinced the Swiss army to follow a different path (and not tell Mauser about it).
