Hello Jeff,
the color is a result of the metallurgic act of steel-tempering e.g. Straw-Color. If tempering is done at higher temperature the straw-color changes to purple. Steel will be more elastic and less prone to break.
If not done so during manufacture it may have been applied during a refurbishing act.
