The peened out numbers appear to be "A8" which probably represent a unit mark. Unit markings were usually applied to the front grip strap (are there any stamped there?) and the placement of this "A8" would not be to regulation. That may be the reason for their removal. By the way, this is a very nice early Erfurt that possesses the Prussian eagle on the front of the trigger guard. Thanks for posting the photographs.
