Dave,
Poplar is one of those woods that doesn't take stain very well that results in the uneven appearance of the base. There's a pre-stain wood conditioner available in Home Depot, Lowe's, local hardware/paint store that will solve this situation. Miwax, as one example, makes this pretreatment. Try it you'll like it. By the way very nice stand.
