I can vouch for Steve's method of supporting his guns with a rod in the barrel. There are several variations of this, I do recommend coating them with rubber or at least putting electrical tape on the rods to prevent scraping.
This method allows for storage in very tight spaces ( hidden wall storage) I also recently modified a regular gun safe using this method to allow storage of several more handguns in the upper part above the long guns.
If you live in a humid area, this method allows for good air circulation and I have never had a problem with rusting because of condensation.

Do a search on the forum, some other ideas out there too
