But I have only heard the marketing term "black widow" applied to those pistols that are marked with the byf code.<br />

Even if the pistol you buy is coded 42, it will make a great shooter because Mauser never made any junk...<br />

By the way, this code (byf or 42 or even S/42 are all Mauser production codes) are stamped on the forward portion of the moving toggle, not the chamber. The small two digit number just forward of the toggle is the last two digits of the pistol)
The marking over the chamber of the pistol is the manufacture date for WW2 pistols in this class and may be either two or four digits depending on the model. Some other luger pistol categories may have other symbols, crests, or information in this area depending upon when and for whom the pistol was made.
