Jeff,

To exapand a bit on Terry's comments, both the US and UK have regulations dating to 1890-91 requiring the country of origin to be stamped on foreign-made items. The US requirement is for just the country; I understand that the UK required "made in..." although I have not yet confirmed this.

Reportedly in 1921, the U.S. regulation was revised to include "made in..." as well.

There may be more to say on this topic, but I am still looking into it.
