To Steinar and Ron:

Steinar, I have no problem of using vinegar. Yes, vinegar will probably rust the parts since it is after all an acid. I just want that junk gone forever.

Ron, your suggestion of using 00000 steel wool or stainless steel wool and a good gun oil is also good. It seems that would be labor-intensive. The down side to that approach is that I probably would not be able to get into the tiny nooks and corners.
