Hoyt,

Before you go too far. Try 00000 steel wool and a good gun oil. Lightly rub with oil and steel wool periodically wiping it with paper towels. If you notice that it's coming off on the paper towel? Then it's working. Time , patience and elbow grease.

Another method is to try stainless steel wool. It looks like a course scowering pad, but it doesn't harm the original finish.
