Doug, depends on how comfortable you are in messing with them. With Weimar period grips that were really nasty, old, dirty and oily, I have used paint stripper on them.

otherwise, normally I generally use murphys oil soap on them, and this takes most grime off.

any paint remover, soap, etc, makes them look very bleached out (which must be hard on the wood) and then I use tung oil on them. Used to use boiled lindseed oil, but that takes a long time to dry...
