You have what is known as a "relieved" sear bar. In 1916 an improvement to the sear bar was made that permitted a loaded gun to be cleared with the safety on. Before the sear bar was relieved, with the safety on you couldn't bring the toggle back far enough to extract the cartridge from the chamber. Many earlier guns that were still in service were retrofitted with the relieved sear bar.
