Norm, It does inflate, take the shape of the drum, fold around it so to speak. It looks different when it is shown flat. The drum is loose and comes out the large end. Not like the fake leather covers you see from time to time.
The buttons are quite dished. I believe they are the same ones used on German Zeltbahns.
