David,

I like using the yellow Elmer's wood glue for carpenters. The key is to wipe off any excess with a damp rag before it dries. I let things dry for 24-hours.

I also use this making Japanese shoji screens.

As an experiment, I have tried to break a glued and cured joint. The wood will splinter all around the glued joint, but not the joint itself...
