As Strugess said...it does not help when the current Owner changes grips on the gun to make it look more like a M1899.
He also mentions a toggle number change as well (more modern-day...), but I do not know the details of the source of that Strugess information.
It very well could be a original M1899 with some M1900 parts used as replacements.
