In Virginia, the minimum age to own a handgun is 21 and the minimum age for a long gun is 18.
Each state's laws probably vary on the age restrictions.
Even at Walmart, the cashiers are supposed to ask whether a person is buying ammo for a handgun or a long arm. With my gray hair, they shouldn't ask any questions at all.
