Herbz, it seems it has only been in the last two decades where those other than collectors have even become aware of the signifigance of the suffix letter... new folks to Lugers need to know that the suffix letter is an essential part of the serial number...
With most military models having 4 digits or less, repeated numbers are frequent for the military production of Lugers... the only thing that distinguishes one 9999 from another 9999 are the manufacturer's code, the year of manufacture, and the suffix letter... those things in combination are what make each military Luger unique...
