Do you think that the base may be original and have anything to do with the large E that is sometimes found along side the chamber date on some lugers.

Just a wag but as I recall Ron Smith had an interesting lugers history from one of the security firms guarding an aircraft plant, if the small e has a similar bearing to an aircraft engine plant this may be the origin of the large E on chamber marked lugers.-- ie --similar security firm assigned to guard the engine plant.
