SS P08
My friend has an old P08 (DWM), however in a very poor state, with some markings I cannot immediately identify.
S/N is 2637, WaA103, 1918, SS-runes in a rectangle on all main parts, flat wooden grip plates, "gesichert" painted in red. On the underside of the barrel, below the S/N, is stamped "8,89" ? Cannot identify it from the technical and general information available in this forum. Any help? Thanks, Peter |
Re: SS P08
Welcome Peter! Costanzo's World of Lugers Book reports " 1934-1945 Dual Lightning bolst symbolic of the SS Schutz Staffel protection squad. Used by the elite guard of the N.S.D.A.P. Found on DWM and Mauser left frame panel, above chamber dates and on right receiver. This squad was originally formed to provide protection for Hitler. Watch for fakes!" Hope this helps

Re: SS P08
Peter, if I read your question correctly, the 8,89 small stamped numbers under the barrel indicate the land and groove inside diameter dimensions. One thing, the red GESICHERT is not supposed to be red, that could be some aftermarket lacquer stick or someone may have decided to 'paint' a Luger. (Actually, green would be more appropriate for SAFE, no?)
