Extractor question

One question that has been on my mind for awhile is the correct finish for the extractor. How was a Luger extractor finished when it left the factory? I have seen photos, taken from the top of the pistol, showing it blued, strawed, in the white, and reddish brown. This was also a question asked in the latest quiz. The correct answer in the quiz is not blued or strawed. Just want to get some clarification on this. Bill

Re: Extractor question

Bill, my Military Mausers have blued extractors. I have some armorers extractors that are also blued. I think the plum colored extractors were an anomaly of the bluing process. The only strawed extractors that I have seen are Ted's.

Re: Extractor question

Frank, your experience parallels mine exactly. I don't know if you read question #9 on Lugerforum Quiz #3 but it asks for the three outside visible metal parts which are neither blued nor strawed. Am I reading this incorrectly or what? The answer is: Grip screws, Toggle Pins, and Extractor. Am I reading this wrong?

Re: Extractor question

I think they were heat treated to a higher temp than the strawed parts, to come out a brighter blue than the "blued" parts. Although the parts on the later Mauser guns that were salt blued appear to be salt blued also.

Re: Extractor question

In my limited experience, what I think I have seen is fire-blued ejectors, sear bar springs, front connecting pins, rear connecting pins, and grip screws. This, of course, would apply primarily to pre-WWII Lugers (I told you my experience was limited..I haven't graduated to the 'newer' Lugers yet..still living in the 1906-1929 era)

Re: Extractor question

I also puzzled over this question as the extractors have been both blued and strawed.

Re: Extractor question

Leaf Springs are fire blued, that would be hold open spring, mag release spring, and sear spring. The sear spring and sometimes the mag release are visable. I suppose they are blued on later models, so NEVER MIND!

Re: Extractor question(Ted)

Ted, do to the nature of your work, the leaf spring is probably more visible to you than most of us. When you do a total reconstruction to original condition, what parts do you fire-blue?

Re: Extractor question(Ted)

Those items you mentioned if pre 1937, leaf springs, roll pins, grip screws! Thor
