Luger magazine functions
 

I will bow to the moderator's, but I think we should have a topic selection devoted to just Magazine problems. As with the previous question "Feeding Problems!!".Last time I put my Magazine questions under the topic "Luger Accesories". But back to the question... I am experimenting with different magazines trying to find the best one for my G date luger.And I'm running into all the shooting problems I've read in this forum in one way or another.From Action not staying open to feeding problems exactly identical to the one in the previous question right down to the scoring on the bullet casing. So first of all I want to ask. I would think that you would want the magazine to just fall out of the gun when you push the release button, without two handed assistance. Is this not true? Or are most luger owners happy with assisting the magazine out by pulling on the magazine with your off hand while pushing the release button with your shooting hand.As someone told me "Isn't that what the finger hold buttons at the bottom of the magazine are for?"

Lugers are a design of another time and place over a century ago... The typical holster tells the story quite well. They were not designed for fast draw. It was a time when the possession of a pistol by a person was a respected activity. There was no great thought of dropping WOODEN bottomed magazines on the ground to break. They were carefully removed and reused. While a properly fitting magazine will indeed drop out of the gun. I wouldn't want it to do so unless it was a cheap modern replacement (and even those will shatter their bottom piece if they hit a hard surface. As the automatic pistol became a common thing, the design and function of the magazine changed to be more durable... and easily replaced. Remember that there was a reason that magazines were serially numbered to the gun. These guns were designed and were HAND FITTED to matching components including the magazines... even for military issue weapons... unlike our Colt 1911 and 1911A1 that used wider tolerances and interchangeable parts including magazines.

The "finger buttons" on a Luger magazine bottom piece as you call them are to give your thumb and forefinger enough "purchase" to pull out a stubborn or ill-fitting magazine.

As to a special forum just for magazines? I don't think that is necessary but I want to hear from the membership about the "need"... What I do think we "Need" is a forum explicitly for troubleshooting Lugers... I think it falls somewhat out of the category of Shooting and Reloading and may deserve it's own forum.

To add a bit to John's response above, the magazine was one of the reasons that the German military wasn't interested in the pisol at first. If I remember correctly, the caliber was too small, and the magazines too expensive to throw away on the battlefield. This is an understandable viewpoint, considering the fact that they'd only dealt with "clips" up to this point, and mauser strippers were made to be discarded in battle.

Perhaps a renaming of the shooting/reloading section to emphasize operation/functioning of the luger as part of that section?

Like feeding, shooting & reloading or
shooting, repeating & reloading?

ps. It indeed took some time for 1900s military officials to grasp the idea of reusable magazines. One of the initial orders of the Dutch government for lugers and equipment for testing purposes included a whopping large amount of magazines, until someone informed them that the magazines could be refilled :)

We might draw out some lurkers with an Operation/function section. There are a lot of Lugers out there. Best case scenario we help. Another scenario, we save an historic....

How about a change to Shooting, Reloading, Mechanical Operation, and Malfunctions as the new title of this discussion forum?

Johnny, I am afraid I have never seen an UGLY Luger... some rusty ones maybe, but never an UGLY one... I love'em all.

Ahhh, but it could refer to an ugly malfunction, the kind we wouldn't want to see, which would make for an UGLY SHOOTING Luger... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />
