does anyone use Vihtavuori powders ?
I just thought whether I'm alone with this powder choice. I have some load data applicable for P08. Just wondering if anyone would be interested to see my load tables, and velocities I've clocked through P08.

Artsi; I for one would like to see your data. I use Unique in my Lugers, but it doesn"t meter well, and am looking for something else. Accuracy is the most important thing to me. Your article on crimping the 9mm was right on!! I do the same!

Okay, one request is all what it takes. I shall dive into my memos and craft up some simple cookbook for P08. (It'll be very brief, please don't hold your breath for this one).
Thank you for commenting the crimping matter. -Artsi |
Artsi,
I have used a couple of their powders for rifles, but haven't tried any for pistols. I would be interested in having a copy of your data. Lonnie, Blue Dot works much better than Unique. I too, have been a long time user of Unique, but I'm gradually changing over to BD for the 9mm and 30L. It is especially better in the longer barrels, gives more reliable function. |
I use Unique in most 4" barrels and the Blue Dot load with a 124 for those Artillery Barrels for a big boom and more velocity! I think Lonnie was the guy that convinced me of that load. I shot it in his P.38 with over pressure springs in it and it made it function, I was really impressed, then I started using it in the Artillery Lugers I was test firing and was really amazed that the sluggish recoil I was seeing before was GONE and the BOOOOOM was back! BD is slower than Unique and seems just the berrys for those longer barrels. <img src="graemlins/c.gif" border="0" alt="[ouch]" />

i use the vit powder in my IPSC race gun. it is great stuff, meters very well and is clean burning. i only need to clean my gun once a year and even then when i take it apart it only looks like a couple of rounds have been fired, which there was actually about 6000.

Grand! - good to see another IPSC shooter in this Luger community.
I've read good reports on Vihtavuori powders on American handgun magazines, especially ipsc people seem to have found this powder to work well. Due to heavy taxes on imported stuff over here, I therefore have no experience with other powders than this domestic stuff we have. Gunstores don't carry much foreign powders because people find prices too high. Domestic stuff is cheaper. The only other powder I have used is Hodgdon H110 - that is one helluva powder for .44Magnum. I have found it to be unsurpassed in recreational shooting after dark. --- 'jcollin160' - what gun you shoot and in what class (std-mod-open)? Just to confuse people I've taken my Luger to Standard class IPSC competition. Some jaws were dropped. I will do it again. I have a Safariland 008 rig for it and all. Yes - I don't take shooting seriously anymore - (Have I ever?) -Artsi |
Vihtavuori data to be found here www.vihtavuori.fi
A source in the U.S. http://www.midsouthshooterssupply.com/search.asp?search=&type=All&mfg=00157 &dept=&submit=Find+it%21 The prices are lower than they are in Germany. Overall, very good powders widely used here. N110 is very similar to the Hodgdon H110 (we use N110 for .357 Mag & .44 Mag); N140 very similar to H4895 (used for 6.5x55 , .308 , 8x57 IS). 9mm Luger loads using 125 grs FMJ, WSP primer, OAL 1.142" (29.00 mm) are: by SAAMI specs.: 3.7-4.3 grs N320 by CIP specs.: 4.0-4.7 grs N320 A friend loaded mine with 4.3 grs for my P08. Flawless function, very accurate. Juergen |
Hi, have a try with Vectan powders, >BA 9 had been purosely created to load ammo for Parabellum in France , between WW1 and WW2. BA10 is fast burning like 700 X and A series flakes powders give good results in all medium volum cases with less pressure and less muzzle flash than VV; for IPSC, I use SP2 , less dirty and better inflammation than VV. what- I don't like with VV is paying with "red zone" when used around full charge and difficult to burn properly when reducing a lot. furthermore, very sensitive to any change in case volume either seating depth or change of brand for the brass. VECTAN is distributed in USA through Graf & Son's, many reloaders for old weapons using these Nobel sport powders because of pressure generally lower than with many other powders.HTH ( 0.28 gram of BA9 with a 356 402 bullet is a marvel in a Parabellum )
