22-30 Luger aka .224 Goldstein
Finally got my long awaited dies from CH. I reformed 150 new WW 30 Luger cases to 22-30 with only two failures, which were "operator error". The cases have to go thru two forming dies and the FL resizer to arrive at the final shape. Then you have to run the neck expander before loading a bullet.
I have only loaded one bullet so far, a dummy round, so I could take a picture to post here. From left to right: Original 30 Luger case, first die, 2nd die, final shape after FL resizer, loaded round. The bullet is a Speer 45 gr semipointed. Cute lil bugger, ain't it? http://boards.rennlist.com/lfupload/22lugercases-1.jpg |
Hugh, that looks WICKED!! I almost feel sorry for the local armadillo population if you turn it loose on them! I'm anxious to hear a report on it's performance.

They remind me of those Japanese wrestlers. Muzzel velocity?

This reminds me of the .233 Timbs that some folks are shooting in the 7.62x25 CZ52. The difference being that the Timbs uses a plastic sabot. I think they are getting about 1900 fps out of a 4.5 inch barrel.
So what type of Luger have you chambered for this? This would be nice cartridge in a longer barreled gun. Can you use a standard chamber reamer for this? |
That cartridge is just crying out for Hornady's 35gr. V-Max bullets!!!
|
Any updates Hugh?

This project has been put on "hold" until after the first of the year. Too many other ones that need to be put away first, plus deer & duck season is open now!!!!
|
I thought it was quite a coincidence that there would be two very similar, almost exactly the same, with such a similar name and yet seperated by nearly 30 years. .22 Lowenstein & .224 Goldstein
|
What about relining the barrel on a new 6" stainless? For a price, maybe Orimar would even make a barrel, but I think that relining would probably be less money. Just a thought.

What is going on with this project? Any updates Hugh?

It's just laying there in my safe begging to be shot. What with job, checkering all your guys grips, making knives, and continuous wet weather, I just ain't "got aroun toit yet"

He's determined to drive us all into a frenzy waiting for him to fire it. Be interesting to see if it performs as well as the 5.7 FN round. Do you wanna try some 33gr bullets in it???
|
 I can tell that Johnny is one of those "lighter and faster is better" guys. Here I don't even know if 45 or 50 grainers will function the action, and he's wanting me to try 33 & 35 grainers! :p
|
You won't know till you try!!! Which will be.....
|
:D    :D

Somebody mentioned the use of sabots in the 7.62x25. I'd like to find some sabots that wou;d allow use of a 22 bullet in an unmodified Luger, probably 30 caliber but with the right sabot a 9 mm would work too. Or maybe 30 caliber bullets in the 9 mm.
