Underarm (Jackass) rigs for Luger?
 

Are underarm shoulder holsters still made for Lugers? I am a CCW holder and as my Luger is a shooter I'd not mind having it as an occassional carry piece.My email is joly57@hotmail.com if you don't post a reply here.

You may want to contact Jerry B. (lugerholsterrepair) and ask him what he can do for you?? His craftsmanship is EXCELLENT, and I think he probably has some patterns around for different style shoulder holsters? As well - some folks posted a few years ago that a "tanker's shoulder" holster for a 1911 seemed to work - but I have no experience with those, unfortunately....

John, I have one of those and it works fine for the Luger. I think I picked it up at a surplus store or perhaps at a gun show for a reasonable price.

Speaking of underarm 'jackass' type shoulder rigs... I have a question that I have been meaning to ask for a long time.

Back in the mid 60's there was a show on TV called "I SPY" with Robert Culp and Bill Cosby... you can still probably catch it once in while on TVLAND or Nickelodeon... Anyway, Robert Cult played an American espionage agent and he carried a Walther P-38 variant... perhaps with a shortened barrel in a shoulder rig that carried the gun butt forward and hanging down under his arm. I was never able to determine what kind of latch or mechanism kept this gun in the holster but I do know that on camera all he had to do was insert it and it stayed there... there was no fumbling with a strap to secure it... and as far as I could tell, there was nothing behind the gunbutt that held it in...

Does anyone in this crowd, especially our holster guru Jerry know anything about how that holster was constructed in such a way to make that gun available yet secure enough not to fall out while running? I have owned excellent revolver holsters that were worn under the arm virtually upside down but the gun is retained by elastic holding a leather pocket around the curve in the trigger guard... this approach won't work with a P-38 or Luger...

Any insight would be appreciated.

Honestly, I don't know how they did it except to cut the scene where it fell out. Or he had one that was special and was glued in permanently untill the next scene required it's removal.

The "jackass" type rigs hold the weapon either parallel to the ground or slightly butt downward under one arm and there is usually a dual magazine pouch that hangs on the harness under the other arm that sort of balances out the carry. It makes tying the harness to your pants belt less necessary for most folks...

Ed, I meant a photo of a complete JA shoulder rig... your link is just a holster without straps... For someone who hasn't seen one before, I thought the description might help since I don't have a photo of a whole rig.

John, Ed, or anyone. If you scroll down the link, you can't find this particular holster for a "Luger". I pretty much checked all the other holsters and can't find one made for a "Luger". Do you have to custom order it? Or does one of the listed holsters work with a luger.

The Luger does not really lend itself to butt foward underarm carry due to the large size of the rear top of the pistol where any kind of fastener would have to be for quick release by the shooter's thumb. If there is such a rig available, I am not aware of it. :( If you find one, let us all know... :)

Well I guess I'm trying to make orange juice from apples. What I'm trying to get is does anyone know of an after market shoulder holster for personal carry of a Luger. Leather would be nice but not necessary, the new holsters made of new space age type nylon materials would be acceptable too. Does anyone know where to get one?

I suggest you take your carry Luger down to a well stocked gunshop with holsters and find a standard 'barrel-down' version in the material of your choice and I think you will be surprised <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" /> to find that most shoulder holsters designed to carry a 4 inch revolver like a S&W Combat Masterpiece (Model 15) or Combat Magnum (Model 19) will work with your Luger because of the similarity of the frame and barrel profiles.

My preference is for an elastic closure that stretches as you pull out the gun, but velcro and mechanical snaps are your other choices... Just be sure to jump up and down a bunch to make sure your prize isn't going to fall out <img border="0" alt="[crying]" title="" src="graemlins/crying.gif" />

I was alway partial to Bianchi and Safariland holsters, but it has been literally decades since I bought one, and to each his own. <img border="0" alt="[bigbye]" title="" src="graemlins/xyxwave.gif" />

Just a word of causion on the underarm carrying of the Luger. Personally I would never carry one of these in the butt forward position, in fact I question carrying them in what is called condition (1) round in the chamber with the safety on.

I agree. The only safe carry seems to be with the chamber empty, but then working the toggle to load the chamber is pretty awkward.

However, even if you carried a Luger with a loaded chamber and safety on, the safety is very awkward and slow. It's probably better to carry something more modern.
