Reproduction Holsters
 

I'm considering the purchase of two holsters for a couple of my postwar guns...one with a six inch barrel and the other for a four inch gun. There are a number of suppliers advertising inexpensive holsters in Gun List, Shotgun News, etc. Does anyone have any experience re: the quality of this stuff? I would like to locate something approaching the quality of some of my prewar holsters if it's out there.

comments and/or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

I have bought two, then got rid of them. The six inch was one of the CMR ones, got it from Tom Heller, quality good, was happy with it, traded it and the gun for a Weimar police. The four inch was very tight, not as good as quality, it was one of those you buy off of e-bay and wasn't very happy with it. Sold it at a slight loss.

I would be tempted to get a ratty 4 inch old one to take to the range, or one of the new ones is fine for your purposes.

OR........you could have Jerry Burney MAKE you a custom hardshell in any color you want! Quality is as good or better than the Germans did! Here is MY Baby Luger Holster (buckskin color) that he made for me! AWESOME! (Thanks Ken!!!)

I just had Jerry make a custom rig for my C96. His craftsmanship is absolutely flawless. I've purchased a few things in the past from CMR. I got exactly what I paid for and the prices are reflective of their quality. Not bad, not top notch. But for my money, I'll be spending it at Jerry's when it comes to gun leather.

Herb, Thor, Thanks for the kind words about my work. I do appreciate it very much.

Morris, I have expounded greatly in the past about the lack of quality of many of the reproductions in past postings. Do a search and I am sure you will get some to come up. I am too busy with holster repairs to do it again.

I will say one thing, I do not compete with the general run of the mill repro Luger holster makers. I stick to either what they do not make, such as baby Luger holsters or what they make that high end collectors will not tolerate. The Imperial type 1 or 2 6" Navy holster is one of my favorites. The repro's have their place and they are certainly inexpensive enough.

I always recommend that you find an original to suit your purposes if you can afford it. They hold their value and are likely to be worth more than what you paid years later. Besides, they are lovely and a piece of history you can be proud of, the German saddlers who made them knew what they were about. Jerry Burney

p.s. Do not give up on finding a real WWI or WWII holster at a bargin price. If you switch to the Member's Gallery, you will see a very nice 1941 Military holster I was lucky enough to find a month ago in a doll & antiques shop for only $ 68.00. The sellers had actually marked this holster as a "repro"...

There are finds to be had...one just needs to pound the pavement, as the saying goes...

To anybody that knows the answer:

I recently bought an S/42 Luger and the sale included the holster, disassembly tool, and a long cleaning rod with a wooden handle.

I am curious about the origin of this holster. It appears brand new, is black with a silver buckle and strap with three holes. The workmanship is excellent. I don't see how it could be better. It smells of new leather. On the rear between the belt loops it is stamped with an eagle with swastika and under this is stamped WaA727 in an "arc". Below this it is stamped Joa and under that 1943. To the right of the loops is stamped PO8 in 3/4" high letters. It has the "quick removal" (my words) strap also.

I have no idea where it came from but I have seen a holster advertised for $39.97 in Cheaper Than Dirt catalog. It says holster was reproduced on the "original factory equipment". They also have a holster for the P-38 for the same price. Mine looks authentic but it looks and smells new. Any ideas from anyone?

Sorry can't show a picture but I haven't gotten the hang of posting pictures just yet. I might add that the belt loops are perpendicular to the top edge and most original holsters I have seen, the loops are tilted to the left of perpendicular.

colcolombo, What a load of horse hocky! Made on original equiptment! What, a sewing machine? These people make me laugh...There is no original equipment and more than that there are many details that make the difference as to quality fit and finish. Next they will have resurrected an old World Sadler and claim he is back making them again...

I have found none of the repro makers of P-08 holsters come near the quality of original holsters for many reasons. This does not necessarily make them bad since the price could hardly hurt you all that much. I have said it before and probably will many more times though, you would be much better off with the worst original than a new, made in Pakistan repro. They are hard on a pistol when inserted as they are stiff and unbending, rubbing the blue off at an alarming rate. Generally they do not fit, too small. They have no history and have bogus markings on them. The stitching is cotton or nylon, not linen.

So I won't get torched I will say they would be OK if you found one that would actually fit for taking to the range or re-inactment purposes. It would be a shame to roll around in the dirt with an original German Luger holster.

Unfortunately I have not discovered a Company that makes a holster worth a hoot. Thor seem to like the Police he got so I assume it must be Ok as he is very knowledgable about this sort of thing. I think it could be a crap shoot and if I were buying a repro holster I would want to inspect it in person to see if it would satisfy my somewhat finiky tastes. That's just me though....Jerry Burney

colcolombo, Sorry...It's not you my Friend. It's these people who try to hock their wares by making idiotic statements like, Made on original equipment! As you might be able to tell I am not such a big fan of repro holsters. It is simply that I have not seen any that come close to the original craftsmanship of turn of the Century German Sadlers. It's really unfortunate because I have seen the CMR holsters that could come pretty close if they paid the least attention to detail. I really think that if they were to redesign just slightly they could truly make a holster worth having. As it is, what they make is a holster that sorta looks like a Luger holster untill you look close. I have expounded on this subject before when people ask, just look up my past posts about it! My wife has purchased me a couple of repro. holsters. the first one has fake 1941 (German) army markings; and is a perfect fit for a P08. The last one has no markings and fits a Parabellum fine, but the extra mag. pocket is too short and sewn on too high, had to force the lid closed, which pushed the extra mag through the bottom stitching some. I don't ask where she gets them. they both look good to me! I've been looking for a police type holster that Thor has shown us; Who is C.M.R.?

P.S. I have an old crappy W.W.1 holster, and it's quality is far superior to my repro. holsters. Too bad its worn out and spent.

With all respect to Jerry Burney and other forum members I have to tell you that there ARE some aftermarket holsters out there that are very well made.
I got one with a Luger I bought and the fit is perfect and the quality is outstanding. I don't know who made it and it is obviously a copy with all the "appropriate" stampings but I don't see how a holster could be made any better or with any more quality. Although it's a fake, it is a very beautiful, black holster. If I had the hang of posting a photo I would post it. I'm still studying this photo posting thing.

Joe, I think there would be a good market for well made repro holsters. Emahasis on "well made". There are always collectors willing to accept aftermarket(post 1945) items and I cannot blame them for doing so. I honestly do not compete with this market. There is no way I could. It takes me days if not weeks to make a Luger holster exactly as the Germans did at the turn of the Century. I hand stitch and hand hammer and craft until it is just right.The few holsters I have made over the years were crafted from the heart, not for the money. Believe me when I say I am not getting rich pushing a needle 10n hours a day. There is a small select few in the World willing to pay what I ask for these museum pieces and that is as it should be.They are descriminating collectors who appreciate a virtually lost art and are willing to pay today's prices for it. I frankly could not supply more than I do already in my one man shop. Mostly what I do is repair not build from scratch. The few holsters I have made have been what the repro market does not address or do well such as Baby Luger holsters and Imperial Navy's. So there is room for all who want different things.
