<div>Just for you P-38 collectors, I just found an auction on eBay for a very unusual item: WWII SVW45 Steel P-38 Grips.<br />

I have never seen or heard of these types of P-38 grips before. Does anyone have any history on their production and use? Were similar grips ever made and issued for the P-08?<br />

The steel grips were developed by Mauser and since the oil required for the plastics were in short supply, the pressed steel grips saved money and were available. Mauser began to use them in late 1944 and more were used to supplement the plastic until the end of the war. When the French took over control of Mauser, they used the supply in stock on their P.38s. They are not rare and a set will normally sell in the $100 range +- a few dollars. They are not often encountered on pistols, and only bring a very small premium.<br />

As far as I know, there were never any made for the P.08. I would assume that this was due to the P.08 being a secondary pistol in the later part of the war.<br />

<div>Both Marvin and GT can fill you in! These were used in the FN Mauser Models and the "Grey Ghosts" typically phosphate finished! Some of these guns saw service in Viet Nam, by the other side! From capture from the British. Thor<br />

<div>Hi John, I think Marvin has it pretty well nailed...according to Buxton, Mauser had a Lot of left over parts for P.38)
parts for the French to play with...I don't know when Mauser started to make the steel grip's, but I believe it was pretty late in the war. At any rate they had an adaquate stock of plastic grips so that, very few, if any were installed on standard issue P.38's during the war. In my opinion, I think the metal grips are pretty much on French svw 45 & 46 assembled P.38's. As a side note, of the many French svw P.38's I have seen over the years, I have only seen a few where the two steel grip halves matched in color...I have seen them range dramatically in color...silver, gray, pink, copper, rose, & black (Sorry Ted! No Plum!!)....that can make for some startling combinations, and they would probably all be correct!!......till...later...G.T.
