PP Holster

Guys,

This came with a mint AC marked PP that also had two "W" marked mags. The gun is legit but the holster doesn't look right. The Whittington book has nothing similar, what do I have?

I don't want to feature this holster in my collection if not correct and am not that up on the subject.

Jerry Burney (lugerhoslterrepair) needs to comment on this holster Mark... While the holster indeed looks "old" it appears to be very crudely made... the stitching looks like by machine instead of hand stitched... and randomly done instead of carefully...

It may be a homemade holster... but of the correct period.

How about some nice closeups of the PP?

Mark, It's difficult to tell for sure from a photo, but your holster appears to be a WW2 "ersatz" (leather covered cardboard) issue. These were made near the end of WW2 in a size that would hold most 7.65 pocket pistols, as a cheaper alternative to the usual all leather types. TH

Tom and John,

Thanks for the input!

The holster has an old smell but looked odd and yes it appears to have wax type cardboard as a liner.

I have other pictures of the gun I will post but didn't want to do a photomerge if the holster was postwar.

What is an ersatz holster worth?

Mark, Tom has a sharp eye and from what I can see he is right on the money. You can look on the edge of the top and see if there are layers. Some of the smaller parts may be made of leather.

As far as I know ersatz holsters are not highly sought after. While they are a curiosity, they pale in comparison to a finely made leather holster and most collectors I know would prefer a leather one, especially with a fine pistol. This is not to say that someone wouldn't pay a lot for it. Put it on eBay and find out. Jerry Burney

Jerry,

Thanks for the information!

I think I'm going to keep the holster with the gun as I think they have been together for some time. I paid $495.00 for the rig so I'm not looking to recoup any cash. The gun is a real nice minty example and I will post some photos soon.
