Navy Lugers

I am thinking about purchasing a, what appears to be a Navy Luger. The proof mark is under the barrell. The Date is 1939, 4" barrell, all parts visible have matching #'s,matching magazines (2), finish is excellent, checkering is excellent, any comments that anybody has for me would be greatly appreciated.

What indication do you have that this is a Navy luger? None of your description leads to that conclusion...

To really know what you are considering buying, go to the techical information page at Lugerforum.com and get the identification sheets and when you have obtained all the information the sheets ask for, post the info here and someone will help you determine the origin of your luger...

Mauser Navy Lugers appear to be the same as "Army" Lugers except for the grip strap markings. The Ostsee (East or Baltic Sea) is usually marked on the front grip strap and the mark starts with an "O" and is along the grip strap. The Nordsee (North Sea) is usually marked on the rear grip strap and the mark starts with an "N" and is across the grip strap. Then the number follows the alpha character.

I agree with Frank. What you may (big word) have is a WW2 naval P08 and not a WW1 navy P04. I don't watch the WW2 Lugers much but I think that some of them had navy crown M proof marks on P08's. But I have also seen P04's that had their barrels shortened after WW1 and fitted with new barrel crowns and front sights. Some of these were not even fitted with new crowns which were basically just a sleave over the tip of the shortened barrel. They just had front sights put onto the hacked off barrels.

I want to thank you guys for the help so far, I have posted a new post with more information that leads me to think that this gun is not Navy. If you would be ever so kind to look at the new post under p.08 Military Lugers, there is lots more info. Again Thanks, as I am new at this.
